When it comes to buying a motorbike jacket the sheer amount of jackets available on today’s market can appear to be overwhelming and selecting the correct one to suit your specific needs can seem a daunting task. However, following these simple guidelines you can bypass allot of the unnecessary information out there and get a good idea of which motorbike jacket is going to be best for you.

Firstly, although when you think of a motorbike jacket most people tend to assume it must be constructed from leather, this however, is not the always the case and there are a variety of materials from which modern motorbike jackets are constructed, including the lighter and more breathable textile jackets.

The most important point with any jacket is to ensure that it offers you a good level of protection in the case of an accident. Immediately, many will consider a leather jacket, but there are various other fabrics which will also do this job. Make sure the jacket has CE approved armour, the higher the level the better the protection, many would argue that the top level, level 3, is the only way to go to give protection for the most severe of falls.

Also consider the option of a jacket that is waterproof and breathable. This is important as you will more than likely be riding in a variety of weather conditions, if your jacket isn’t waterproof it will make riding difficult and dangerous in wet conditions and if it’s not breathable you are likely to feel uncomfortable and be at risk of overheating in the summer months. Many jackets have detachable thermal liners which will be very useful to adapt your jacket to suit the different seasons.

Ensure you do not buy a jacket that is too small; you will need room to maneuver to control your bike correctly and remain safe. Also a jacket which is too big will be likely to distract you and provide a potentially hazardous annoyance as it will get caught by the wind and flap about and can also hinder your balance.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to purchase a jacket that is bright and visible to other motorists to ensure you are seen by all and to help keep you safe.
