Firstly, the sad truth is that whilst there are plenty of people out there looking for love online, there are also many who are not. They are either wasting your time playing games, or worse still, up to something sinister.

For the reason you should always be careful and keep your wits about you. Never reveal personal details about yourself. Always spend time getting to know someone before you meet them, and when you do meet them – make sure it\’s in a public place.

Secondly, be aware that not everyone uses photos that accurately depict what they look like. It is known that some people use very old photos or even photos of their siblings, friends, or even complete strangers.

Often this is done purely because the person is insecure about how they look. However, if they cannot be truthful now do you really want to consider entering in to a relationship with them?

If in doubt ask the person for a particular photo e.g. one with them holding a sign up with their name on. Alternatively if you both have the technology, ask if they want to video talk using webcam and MSN or Skype messenger.

These are just two things to look out for. Online dating on the whole is very safe, but you have to use common sense and exercise caution.
